MOBILE, Alabama — For Natchitoches Central (La.) sprinter Corrieon Mosby, the Open Division of Mobile Challenge of Champions meet held at UMS-Wright on Friday was an opportunity to showcase his talents.

Although a glitch in scheduling and funding for traveling prevented Mosby — a senior who has gotten offers from Nicholls State and Southeastern Louisiana — from being in the Invitational Division, he capped off a good day, winning the 200 in 22.45 seconds after setting a personal best of 48.46 in the 400 meters.

Because of an issue in getting funding for the entire team to come to Mobile, Mosby almost wound up not competing at all.

“We had a little incident where our school couldn't raise enough money for the whole team to come down here,” he said. “At first, I wasn't going to come, but my summer coach came and got me (and brought me here.)"

In the 200 and 400, Mosby felt that the competition was intense, even though it was not against the elite runners.

“Everybody was fighting hard to win, and everybody was giving it their best, and it pushed me to a PR (personal record) today,” he said. “They pushed me pretty hard. I was pretty nervous (coming into the race) because coach told me that somebody was running a 46. I had to come out here and change my game, so I raced the first 200 faster than normal. I had to push myself harder to make sure I ran a good time.”

Cosby said that he is becoming more accustomed to the 400 now that he has tasted success in the event.

“I normally run the 200, but I've been training for the 400 for the last couple of months, and I'm starting to like the 400 better,” he said. “I'm going to run both of them and get my body ready for the 400 and the 200 at state.”

Mosby may not be running in Saturday's Invitational at St. Paul's — which starts at noon — but eight other athletes who competed on Friday will compete on the elite stage.

Among them is Spanish Fort (AL) distance runner Carissa Jones, who won the girls' 3,200 meters in 12:00.28 — a personal best by 17 seconds. After running virtually side by side with West Florida Tech's Raliegh Nesbitt, Jones pulled away in the last three laps to win by a substantial margin, and will run in the Invitational two-mile race.

“I was just hoping I would run hard and try to see if I could get into tomorrow's race,” she said. “I'm proud to be in it. I just tried to stay with the leader (Nesbitt), and no one else was pushing it (the pace) so I went out by myself. I didn't know if she was going to come back or stay back.”

Jones' teammate, Tre Threat, will join her on Saturday. Threat won the boys shot put with a throw of 48 feet, 2.75 inches. Other athletes making it to the Elite Division were Patton Little of Starkville (Miss), who won the boys 1,600 (4:31.36); Hoover's Jailyn Mattox, who won the girls javelin (109-3); and Huntsville's Connor Brookman, who won the boys javelin (156-1).

In addition, the boys 3,200 meters winner, Auburn's Seth Glidewell (10:00.53), and his teammate,Michael Robinson, who won the discus (143-4), also advanced to Saturday's Invitational Division meet.Davidson's Tyler Jackson, the third-place finisher in the boys 400 (49.34), advanced as a result of two other runners scratching from Saturday's meet.

Other notable performances Fridayincluded:

- Smiths Station's Takiya Briggs winning the girls 400 in 58.34. Two of her teammates, AlaineSutton and Siraya Johnson, won the girls long jump (17-3.25) and 800 (2:26.26) respectively.

- West Florida Tech's Javen Jackson winning the boys 800 in 1:59.95.

- Fairhope's Hayden Hatfield winning the boys pole vault (13-0).
